South Africa secured their maiden ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title with a five-wicket victory over Australia at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. This win marked the Proteas’ second ICC title, their first since the Wills International Cup in 1998 (later renamed as Champions Trophy), ending a 27-year wait for silverware.
The Proteas entered the WTC final as table-toppers in the 2023–25 cycle, having won 8 out of 12 matches. The skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first. South Africa dominated Day 1 by bowling out Australia for 212, with the help of a brilliant five-wicket haul from Kagiso Rabada. Steve Smith (66) and Beau Webster (72) were the top scorers for Australia.
But, Australia bounced back late on Day 1, taking four quick South African wickets. On Day 2, Australian skipper Pat Cummins led a fierce bowling attack, claiming six wickets to dismiss South Africa for just 138. David Bedingham top-scored for the Proteas with 45 runs.
With a significant lead in hand, Australia aimed to post a challenging total in the second innings. But South Africa’s bowlers struck again, Lungi Ngidi picked up three wickets while Rabada added another four to his tally. Mitchell Starc fought hard with 58 runs and was well-supported by Alex Carey scoring 43, which helped Australia reach 207.
South Africa were chasing 282 runs and showed great composure in their 2nd innings. By the end of Day 3, they had posted 213 while needing just 63 more runs. Aiden Markram, who had already completed his century, ended up scoring 136 on Day 4. He had solid support from Bavuma (66) and South Africa chased down the target comfortably. Kyle Verreynne hit the winning runs by sealing a memorable victory.
This historic triumph not only gave South Africa their first WTC title but also ended a long-standing ICC trophy drought which made it a momentous occasion in their history.
